Measuring estuary extent and restoration is important for tracking of restoration targets. The purpose of this protocol is to monitor the extent and change in estuarine habitat over time in the Puget Sound region. Functional estuary surface area includes the extent of distributary and tidal channels and wetlands with full exchange of natural tidal flows within the inundation area.
See the protocol for tracking estuary extent and restoration that the University of Washington prepared for the Puget Sound Partnership, which details surface area mapping and delineation (note: this protocol was added after the Decision Tree was completed, and is not currently included in that section).
Additional information on estuaries and monitoring in Puget Sound can be found at the Puget Sound Partnership's Vital Sign website.
