Epibenthic Pump
Battery operated
Purchase a boat bilge pump (12 volt, 2000 GPH), and the necessary cords, on/off switch, and battery connectors. A motorcycle battery works well as it is lighter to carry. Connect a tube to the outlet so that the suctioned water and invertebrates can be collected in a 0.106 mm sieve. Using flexible PVC coupling fittings of different sizes with adjustable clamps, connect a PVC pole on top of the pump for holding the device, and a 16 cm diameter PVC cylinder on the bottom. Drill some large holes in the cylinder and cover with mesh so that filtered water is pulled through the pump.
Hand operated
Purchase a hand bilge pump (24" length, 1-3/4" diameter). Similar to the battery operated pump, connect a cylinder to the bottom of the pump and a tube to the outlet. The outlet can also be modified by attaching the cod-end of a plankton net or a PVC/mesh fitting.
